I queried a GameOP, and I got a few answers about the whole q3 server thing...

apparently, the q3 servers are being moved, and they should *all* return shortly. don't know how long it'll take however.

patience might be in order until then? and if the statements made by Twisted turn out to be false, well... I'm sure gamearena will have alot to answer for >=]

Man, this whole thread really disappointed me - I would have liked to have thought most of you guys know we wouldn't take these servers down, and would at least be able to phrase your line of inquiry a little more politely. Instead, I find this thread, full of abuse and completely misinformed and idle speculation - something that I've noticed is becoming increasingly typical of the Quake 3 community.

For starters, in Nathan's post on the front page, there is only the briefest mention of Quake 3 "dropping a server". For people that checked, you would have seen it was the Q3 Urban Terror #3 server.

Secondly, I would have thought by now you guys would be clever enough to check the www.evenbalance.com website for news about PunkBuster, because it has caused so many problems. When I noticed the servers weren't working (when I checked at around 8pm Saturday night), the first thing I did was go there and notice that, wow, there's another problem with PunkBuster and it was causing server crashes.

5 minutes after I'd read that, the servers were back up again. Then I found this gem of a thread.

Seriously, some of you guys need to have a bit of a think before you start posting stuff. The few who threatened to "pull their Telstra subscription" should realise that they're in a tiny minority of gamers now - Quake 3 is a minority game divided into a bunch of minority gametypes. We could safely cull it with pretty much neglible effect anywhere.

BUT WE DON'T. NOR DO WE WANT TO. Note the capital letters. I'd use bigger text, but I figure if you can't read that, then I'm just wasting my time, again, having this same discussion with those of you that feel like you're being slighted because we don't have 10 x 32 player RA3 servers. Yes, we've added some new Counter-Strike servers. Why? Because they're ALL full, ALL the time, ALWAYS. Quake 3 is NOT. Thus, we divert resources where they are NEEDED.

I will state though, the more abusive that you guys get, the less likely it is for us to support your game. Because one day, I might not be here to look after Quake interests, and whoever else decides to poke their head in to see what is going on here might not feel it is worth the effort if all that is going to be generated is abuse.

Games such as Global Operations had to be culled from GameArena, and it was a really sad thing to do, because they had a small community of really, really nice guys that fully appreciated the dire straights their game was in - a shrinking community as people migrated on to other, better games. Still, despite that, they not only continued to just be nice, but understood our reasons for shutting down their server (and still visited and chatted here for some time after).

So please, for your own sake, try and be a bit more mature when you're posting things, ok? Don't abuse people. Don't abuse admins. Don't abuse Telstra - every little thing that happens on GameArena isn't some GIANT TELSTRA CONSPIRACY to steal more of your money.

If you guys want more resources for Quake 3, here is what to do:

a) Play on GA more often
b) Encourage your friends to play on GA more often
c) Visit the forums and post about stuff other than why trog sucks because he loves Counter-Strike so much and hates Quake 3
d) Use your time constructively to help GROW the community rather than stifle it with abuse and slaw.

I can _almost guarantee_ that if you guys can keep the Quake 3 servers full all the time, we can allocate more resources to it, or at the very least reshuffle some resources in favour of certain Q3 gametypes.

I know several of you here were just mad because it looked like we'd removed a stack of the Quake 3 servers as part of the movements, but this is NOT the case, and this should have been obvious from Nathan's front page post. Please try and remain calm if something like this happens again. Servers are VERY rarely down for longer than a few hours; just today I decided not to do anything on my PC until 8pm and my brother decided not to play RA3 for a whole day, so neither of us noticed.

Also I am sure that there are alot of people on the quake3 servers that know how many people are up them selves. Its only becuase it takes so long to get good at the game and when you finally do they think that their king **** and no one else matters. **** me off. These are most of the people who are abusive on the fourms(havnt checked who posted on this fourm).

Unfortunatley..here at GA..trog is more or less the sheperd and had his back turned whilst this storm in a teacup was rageing out of control.

I dont know if it was rocket who hyped everything up but if when I came on and someone said the servers were down I would of gome and done something else but everyone was saying that the server was taken away. Made a stupid post then I checked the news and they said one or 2 quake servers will be taken away. Went on to cogs and saw 4 were down so I knew that 4 wouldnt of been taken away but also thought that they where down and that they took away the ra3 server. Of couse this made no sence but still with 30 people int he chat room going off and everyone in the thread going off their head it was hard to ingore.

All that I can say that if I didnt speak to anyone and not seen this thread I would of read the news and worked out that the servers where down and wouldnt of even thought about trog taking away the servers.

Its jsut when I got in at 6 and saw that everyone was **** off about the server been taken away you get dammm angry untill you work out clam down and work out that the servers are only down and that first bit of anger made this post.

I think we're all very apologetic about how quickly we jumped the gun. However, please realise the reasons why this community is so jumpy. GA is the only real RA3 server still in existance which is always packed with the same die-heart q3 crowd.

When we read things like "server reshuffle" and "adding CS servers" and then we are faced with almost all Q3 servers dissapearing, of course there is that "oh no, is this D-Day" response.

As far as saying that the q3 crowd is most abusive, I would sincerly like to see the effects of having 100% of the CS communities game resources dissapear. You think they would be all "oh pooey, our servers seem to be down, let's go play in the park"?

We know we're in the minority, I reckon that's why some reactions are simply due to the paranoia of losing ra3.

bring back the UrT server 3...2 servers constantly full, we finally get a third that is all buggy and gets stuck on maps with no voting locked (UT's fault cause of bug) but the server swas still gettin use and when voting is back VERY soon will get even more use.

UrT is a try hard cs... and it doesn't compare to Sof2, which i think should get an extra server..

even so, im still checking my contract to change isp threat or no threat, free transfers within the state, lower pings than bpa to gamearena server and even lower to optus, 12gb off peak and 5 on peak..... all for 80 bucks. there isnt too much the decide on, only the advantages of being able to use gamearena for free, but when u get downloads from tucows for free ......

This thread is an absolute disgrace; I feel ashamed to be a part of the gaming community.

From working with him, I know personally if it weren't for trog's efforts, Quake3 would not enjoy the quality of service which it enjoys here on GA. Yet, due a problem in a 3rd parties software, on a SATURDAY, you all jump down his throat at the slightest chance telling him what a idiot he is, he at his head up his ***, yada yada yada.

The pathetic behaviour of gamers online is totally out of control. How do you people lead your lives when you seem to totally lose it over a 3rd-party service outage. I woke up this morning to find half my Foxtel channels aren't working. Am I annoyed? Certainly. Do I ring up Telstra and abuse them with whatever random thoughts enters my mind? Hell no. I'm give them a day to sort out any upstream problems, and if its still broken, I'll call them tomorrow and see what's happening.

Somehow, the normal way society works continue to fail to translate to the online games community. This is not news to us older gamers, but continually frustrating as games reach a more mainstream audience, nothing seems to change. If anything, the community just keeps getting worse.

The 'churn' of GameOps that GA experiences is probably the best example of this. Players from the GA community volunteer their own time to help make GA a better service for gamers. Yet time and time again, the playerbase just tears into the GameOps for no apparent reason other than some misguided inferiority complex. Sooner or later, GameOps just get tired of the community's rediculous abuse of them and retire - often leaving a huge hole in the very structure that keeps the game alive via ladders, cheat management, server configuration changes, etc.

Over the last year, GA has lost far too many fantastic GameOps - leaving GA a worse service for their loss. The tireless attacks of their community completely destroy each GameOp's motivation to do anything for that game. Others almost seem to entirely ignore the community and hence become somewhat unuseful due the constant negativity.

I'm often left wondering if we at GA are running Australia's best gaming service, or a free child-care facility. That's the only way I can rationalise what happens around here at times - everyone is under 10 years old. The kind of behaviour displayed above and countless other threads surely cant be coming from mature, well-adjusted adults.

The continued obcession with the "number" of CS servers is truely disturbing. GameSpy Worldwide Stats. CS: 78819 players online. RA3: 502 players. Ratio: 157 CS players to every 1 RA3'er. Pay attention to that statistic. Many people seem to fail to grasp how big CS really is.

Now let's look at GameArena. CS spots: 340. RA3 spots: 24. Ratio: 14 to 1; or less than a tenth of the ratio dictated by player numbers alone.

So, I ask you... which community should be complaining about the number of CS servers? The only community getting ripped off in terms of fair distribution of resources is the CS community itself.

this thread sounds like a 1950's thread. Especially Nathans post. I know he's right, but still, if u think about it, its just like white people (CS) vs the black (Q3). Just cause theres more white doesnt mean they get the 'more say' or the 'more servers'.

blayde yes it was, would u ring up your phone company/help desk and abuse the poor guy on help desk? simply because you arnt getting any reception?, or would u politely discuss what has happened? and what needs to be done to fix it, etc, this situation is very similar, and should be dealt in the same way, query with the "helpdesk" people like trog and other game op's, find out whats wrong, then do what u need to have it corrected, not just come out flaming expecting the worse. wd to all the kiddies who did come and flame trog.

Yes that is what disappointed me, that we weren't told what was happening. I know you weren't around when this happened, Trog but atleast one admin must've been. Couldn't that admin just say in the chat channel, that they have noticed a problem and they would rectify it asap. I think most people would have aggreed to that and stopped complaining.

I couldn't really care if you got rid of the quake 3 servers or your were doing something else, all I really want and probably others is to be informed as to what is happening.

You say read the front page, it doesn't say which servers are being taken down from quake 3, it would've been better said that you were taking down an urban terror server.

Anyway, I have nothing against you or what you do. You run the show, we are just here to play. Alot of people will say stupid things on the internet before thinking about the consequences and they don't understand what the other person might feel but thats the thing about being anonymous on the internet, you can hide behind oyur screen.
