Outside of comedy, my favorite series of all-time are The Sopranos, Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad and North and South. (Didn't see the last one coming eh?)
TV aficionados - what else am I likely to love?
Tried and failed:
The Wire.. forced myself to keep watching and managed to swallow and enjoy the first season, but I'm on my 3rd attempt of sitting through season 2. Doesn't bode well. Edit: I now take this back.
Hell on Wheels bored me to death.
The only crime/investigation show I kinda liked was The Shield but it got really old after a couple of seasons.
Deadwood was pretty cool but I hated the protagonists and couldn't relate with them at all which made it increasingly annoying to watch. Besides, shows dead.

Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones are my two favourite shows.
Louie is my favourite comedy show though. Goes from irreverant and often absurd stand-up and skits, to grittily real and poignant moments, the likes of which you won't see in any other show. If you don't dig Louis' comedy that much, watch an episode from the first season called "Bully" if you want to see the best television has to offer. More of a drama episode, though it has it's moments of comedic gold. It blew my mind.
Edit: my clip was removed by Twentieth Century Fox Film Corp. ****.
(Speaking of) Bored to Death is pretty decent. Doesn't give Zach enough screen time or really show off how brilliant he can be, but some episodes have hilarious moments, and Ted Danson is awesome.
Homeland is fantastic. The adverts make it look like a cheesy 24 style terrorist thing, when really the writing and acting are top calibre.
That's all I can think of. I also tried getting into The Wire, watching the first season right now, but I find myself putting off watching the next episode each time.

Give Sons Of Anarchy and The Walking Dead a go...
I don't know how I did it but I watched all of the wire, it wasn't that bad but it wasn't all that great either. I think it was the second or third season of wire which I hated the most and struggled to sit through. The season where it shows where and how the drugs are smuggled in from the ports, what a shocking, ****, boring season that was...

Even bieltanman would like Breaking Bad thats how grest it is.
Sons of Anarchy was a thrilling ride for 2 seasons then it went all smoke and mirrors but still would drop a big hitter episode that just blows you away.
Boardwalk Empire had a slow first season with lots of soft **** but holy **** was S2/3 a satisfying experience.
Justified is another great show I would be adding to my list of shows to watch. The latest season is kind of **** though it may improve.
Hell on Wheels has a great theme and good acting.

The last 2 seasons of Fringe are pretty good. Nothing like the first few seasons so don't be fooled.

So I ended up giving The Wire another chance... and wow.
Pushed through to episode 3 or 4 of Season 2 - and hooked hard. Finished Season 2 in two days and just burnt through Season 3 yesterday/this morning.
I can see why people tend to dislike Season 2, it's little closer to cops and robbers vs Season 3 which was just amazing to watch.
I'm now excited that I have two more seasons to go through.

I actually like season 2 of The Wire best. The whole docks closing down situation is something I can understand well compared to drug dealing in the projects.
Currently watching Warehouse 13 after going through Eureka. Both shows have their moments but aren't anything special. I can't wait for GoT to return though, because I want to see me some karma in action.

You do know that GoT's isnt like most fantasy shows/ stories where the good guys get hammered and then somehow the tables turn and the good guys manage to win in the end.
mostly

There's definitely an angle there with Frank Sobotka's place as a working man whose heart is in the right place. I'm curious if people stand differently on him than me. Differs to Season 3 where you can kind of tell who is going to go down before it happens. Despite the conflicts being a bit more predictable it's the social commentary that really shines.

mostly Well aware of that fact, but the good thing about a series where people can and will die often is that sometimes the badguys are the ones who buy the farm. Even having read the books I still enjoy watching the show, which is rare for me - if I know what's going to happen I usually find shows or movies incredibly dull.

Try these
Sherlock (the one with Martin Freeman) Black Mirror (short at two seasons, three episodes each but very cool) Utopia (twisted and weird as hell but mesmerizing)
(haven't watched yet but heard good things) The Americans Vikings
+1 for Justified +1 Walking Dead (latest season is the best so far with episode 15 WOW!)

Have now gone through all three seasons of Boardwalk Empire. You did well to recommend it - it was fantastic. Mr Harrow has probably got to be one of the most intriguing characters I've ever watched. Now have nothing to watch again. Halllp.
