EDIT: Updated 30/11/07 to include more information. Hint admins: how about a sticky?
I'm getting incredibly slow speeds while capped. How can I fix it?
Follow these steps:
1) Go to www.speedguide.net
2) Download TCP Optimizer (sic before anybody asks)
3) Run it.
4) Drag the "Connection Speed" slider down to around 56k.
5) Down the bottom right, click the radio button marked "Optimal Settings"
6) Press Apply Changes, and reboot.
When you're uncapped, reset the slider to somewhere around your regular speed mark, or you might experience poor performance when uncapped.
I'm getting high pings, and I don't know why. What should I do?
This is a long process but by far the best way to determine if it's something on your end (and therefore something you can fix), or if it's something past your home network (and therefore out of your control).
1: READ THIS THREAD, ESPECIALLY THE FIRST POST. This is VITAL in the diagnostic process! If you don't bother to do this, most likely nobody will be able to give you a straight answer.
http://www.gamearena.com.au/messageboar ... hp/2541714
1a: If you're on Cable, make sure you read the end of the first post for an additional step which might solve the problem. ALL TELSTRA CABLE USERS SHOULD READ THIS THREAD IF THEY ARE EXPERIENCING PING PROBLEMS:
http://www.gamearena.com.au/messageboar ... hp/2539528
2: Check to see if there are any other threads that relate to your problem. Yes, this means reading other threads. They might contain a fix for your issue. These days there aren't as many around, but reading always helps extend your knowledge.
3: If you still have a problem, in order to get the best possible help, ensure you post with:
- Your internet connection (ADSL 256/512/1500/2+, Cable, whatever)
- Steps you have tried to fix the problem
- Pingplots to the servers you're trying to play on.
- When you're trying to play on the servers.
- If your regular internet speeds have taken a decline.
- Any other additional information you think can help
This is the best way to get help with the issue from the GA ISP Forum or Tech Support. By following this you make it far easier for everyone to give you an answer quickly and (to a certain extent) accurately. If nothing else, I check the ISP and Tech Support forums daily and I usually respond to most threads.
Thanks for your attention.
Note: I'm not an employee of Telstra. None of this is advice from Telstra or GameArena or anywhere else. I'm just a regular community member trying to help people out.

Also to assist in the speedy delivery of a solution:
1 - Read the whole thread!
2 - Read the whole thread again!
3 - Do what the thread tells you to do.
3a - Read it again, to make sure you are doing what your supposed to be doing.
4 - Do something else, have a nap, so your mind can process this information.
5 - Read the thread again to make sure you understand it.
6 - Try posting something correct, then editing it after reading the thread, yet again!
Things that often hinder solutions.
1 - 1337 5p34|<
2 - Improper sentence structure filled with lots of lines for no friggen reason! Annoying huh?
3 - Which brings us to my next point, improper punctuation and grammar.
And, my fourth and final point.
4 - Telstra, having you, on all fours and giving it to you, while you wear hat made of tin foil, to prevent the mutant alien zombies from the 5134465344346th galaxy from disecting your mind. In case you didn't realise it, conspiracy theories.
BTW Soldant, good idea for posting this. Just need it stickied now.

from what ive found out, its the exchanges, not peoples setup. and telstra "does not guarantee good ping times" so they wont do anything about it anyway.

Yes but if it is people's setup (that can cause the same style of problems) then it can be solved and they aren't sitting there waiting for a problem which will likely not be fixed any time soon. In any case, this helps to diagnose the problem.

Ok I've tried absolutely every possible solution posted on the GameArena forums, every solution from google as well, but still 1 month later I am getting 15kb/s download speeds from the GA file library, not to mention any other sites, and 60% of the time i get unplayable pings in any online game.
I'm on cable, running a SB5100 with a minitar wireless router. everything's completely up to date. is it time to get the bigpond guys out here?

OH GOD YES!
If your speeds are THAT bad, Telstra will likely come out and have a plany with it to see what's wrong.
GO! Make the call now!

It could do. You've got some ping spiking going on there. Unless you do a ping plot nobody can say what the problem is. Though if you're not willing to do it, try the modem page and see if it helps.

1 - Don't care
2 - Still don't care.
3 - Yes, because if you can't spell and you cannot form a sentence correctly, then there must have been something lacking with your education. Perhaps, instead of playing computer games so much, you could have been doing something to benefit your understanding of the English language.
4 - Yes
5 - Yes, but try to avoid the whole "my life story next time." Try to cut to the chase of it.
Have emo's infested the ISP board? Someone start handing out razor blades and instructions on how to slit your wrists.
So, why do you crave my attention and approval dc? It's not like your existance bothers me.

Argue in another thread. This one was supposed to assist people, but the GA Admins won't sticky it. And it definately won't be stickied if arguing continues. The last ISP sticky was nuked because of arguing (and spamming, but that came afterwards).

Mate try reseting your Game setting back to default.
I did the same as you and got no where
my friend told me to reset my settings on my BF2 and poof whole and be hold everything went back to normal, is much crispyer and no lagg nor boots from game server for high pings.
Cheers

I thought it was a pretty good bump. More people need to read this so it can help prevent the same questions being asked over and over.

Falls on deaf ears unfortunately, even if we need something similar to this. Especially about the capped speed problem, that gets asked way too often.

Mmm TCP Optimizer worked like a charm.
I'm on Bigpond's 8000k/256k(?) 12gig Cable plan, and got capped. Could barely play a 20 slot server of Battlefield 2 and got around 2-3kb's while downloading.
Optimized and can play 32-64 slot servers, with decent ping. Along with that, my download's boosted up to 9-10kb's. Might not seem like a lot, but its awesome for me ;D Almost tripled my speed
Cheers.
