So I was watching a movie on the Television (Adjustment Bereau) and had the volume on fairly loud because it was a quiet part of the movie and I had just turned it up. Nek minute the adverts were blasting out some **** about.... ****.... who cares right. So after I had finished **** myself I scrambled for the remote and pressed down volume button like a hundred times before it didnt sound like I was having an advert party. This wasnt the first time this has happened and I have thought in the past maybe there is a device that I can buy that will monitor and adjust the volume to a desired decibel. I did some googling and found this: http://www.smarthome.com/7848T/Terk-VR- ... tor/p.aspxWhich was good but I couldnt help but notice that it is the ONLY device like this that exists and its made by a manufacturer that ...sux and is only 20 bucks. I thought dosnt matter I will grab one of those but then I thought I might do some research first and found this: http://reviews.cnet.com/home-entertainm ... 21144.htmlSo my question is: Is it just a conincidence that the only device like this may or may not burn your house down? Are the patents for a better model rejected because of corruption? Am I going to have to accept the fact that I will have my earballs molested every 8 minutes.

Nobody likes a smartarse.
I just get sick of turning it up and down, its my pet hate. Same with movies, if theres a quiet scene it goes up then all of a sudden the scene switches to a gun fight. I want a device that will monitor the actual sound that is eminating from what ever it is eminating from and instantaneously adjust it.

Go into your TV control settings and set the dynamic range compression don't touch your normal volume settings then just adjust the dynamic bar up or down.
Seriously for an extra $500 bucks i will come around and do it for you.

A compressor/limiter will solve your problems. I'd tell you more about it but then rules would fly off the rails in a litany of fury and turds.

I was also betting there would be a few characters on GA that could help design a device that could achieve what I want. I thought it might be a good way for us all to put our best foot forward and nut this one out together. I cant do this myself but I can attempt to conduct a symphony of expert interests that will culminate in a delightfully unobtrusive television advertisment.

I'd love something like this, I find this on a lot of movies with my home theatre system. I still like the talking parts to be loud, but then an action part gunfight, explosion etc, will just be way too loud.

More information: http://www.ethanwiner.com/compressors.htmlYou can get them in all shapes and varieties. You can even send your sound through a computer and use an app to compress/limit. You can get them in a rack mount, table top, and very small ones for the house that don't look over the top. The way to operate them is generally the same amongst all brands and types. Most of the time I dealt with them was setting them up directly after a DJ's desk, so they couldn't blow anything up from there end, no matter how much volume they give it.

Quote: The Australian Federal Government is pursuing repayment of Emergency loans made to Australians without money for return airfares or who get stuck with medical or accommodation bills who were stranded overseas,$1.3 million in travellers' emergency loans have been paid over the past four years. Schapelle Corby should be debt free since she got no help at all. I am surprised that the government charges money to help people in trouble overseas i guess we should be grateful for small mercies that they don't charge people caught up in cyclones who need rescuing.

You want me to look around at cheaper alternatives? Edit: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/VINTAGE-YAMA ... 429wt_1188 $100 http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Fostex-3070- ... 500wt_1204 $120 http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/SWAMP-CP202- ... 69d&_uhb=1 $160 http://www.swamp.net.au/stereo-compress ... -gate.html $135 (sale) Keep in mind these are designed to work between the source and the amplifier. Eg, between a TV and amp, or between a computer to powered speakers, etc. - The only way to control your volume without screwing your compression settings is to either adjust the volume at the amp AFTER the compressor, or adjusting the output gain on the compressor itself, meaning you have to get up. If you are feeding into a receiver then you're all set.

Thanks heaps.
I just use a set top box and TV, so I guess I would plug the audio from the STB into the limiter and then out into the TV. Would that mean I could use the TV remote to control volume?

Yes. You run your set top box at max volume into the compressor, then you limit using the compressor, then use the TV's volume control.
It takes a bit of reading to understand how they function in order to get the sound the way you want. Probably a few hours of tweaking it to get it just right.
I'd start with maxing out the STB output, putting the limiter on stock settings (no attack, no delay, max range, and turn OFF bypass. Adjust the output gain (final volume) on the limiter to the point where voices are about the correct volume (eg, if you used to use volume 30 on TV to get good speech volume, get it the same). At this stage when you watch something dynamic, the action scenes will be too loud as per usual. Here it's just a matter of 'attacking' the sound until the output is the same as voice at volume 30.
There are settings such as how fast (in milliseconds) you want the limiter to attack the output. You can also adjust the sound level needed for cutoff to begin. With attack, you want this on the faster end of things, so you don't get a loud explosion that cuts off late, we need insta-cut off. The downside to this is any very minor click or tick above voice volume will be attacked as well. These are the settings you just tweak to your liking.
