Sony have announced a special conference called "Playstation Meeting 2013" via a video released on their Youtube/facebook/twitter pages, inviting people to "be the first to know" on February 20th this year.

They have invited investors and media to the event in New York and media outlets and analysts are predicting Sony will reveal the Playstation 4.

Sony did a similar thing in 2011 where they unveiled the Playstation Vita.

It sure does seem like we will be hearing about Sony's new console very soon.

About time. The industry sorely needs a new generation of consoles.

The PS4 will 'likely' be announced in a couple of weeks, but we likely wont see it until the end of the year/start of 2014 in PAL regions.

Rumoured specs of -

CPU - 8 core AMD processor @ 1.6ghz,
4gig GDDR5 ram (possibly 8 in final build)
Modified 2.2gig (?) AMD R10XX GPU
Possible 256gig SSD
Redesigned controller with some form of touch pad on the front, and a 'share button' capable of uploading the past 15minutes of gameplay to social media sites etc..
Up to 1.5x more raw processing power compared to Nextbox specs.

Of course, these are all 'rumoured' specs, apparently leaked by numerous developers.


I certainly hope they go with an SSD as standard.. Super fast load times would certainly be welcomed...

AMD? really? sounds ****,if they go nVidia it'll be less **** but after a few years it'll be **** anyway.

Both Sony and Microsoft appear to be going with AMD.

AMD in the consoles will not be an issue as developers will be programming specifically for that hardware, so unlike PC's, there will not be any compatibility/driver issues..

Not a PC man so i don't know the whole NVIDIA V AMD stuff, although I have heard of quite a few people having compatibility/driver issues with AMD on various games (RAGE for one)..

I just want Uncharted 4, whether thats running on NVIDIA or AMD I don't care, its going to be **** awesome.. Uncharted 2 is my all time favourite game....

1) now the **** pc ports will be even less optimised
2) if the hardware's not really really good for today (the 360/ps3 stats weren't too bad in '05), they'll hit the hardware wall fast and we'll be ***** about **** graphics and terrible FOVs in 2 years and not 5-6.

I really feel like we haven't seen a lot of the PS3 yet. It's just a feeling, but I have one, and I think I only have 2 or 3 games that really put it through its paces. Are you SURE we need a new one?

Okay, yeah, point taken. Obviously a PC is a better platform overall, but what I mean is: The PS3 is obviously a superior hardware device to the more popular X-Box360, yet despite this the market favours the 360, meaning most games that come out are made to match its hardware rather than take advantage of the PS3. Do we really need a new Play Station when we don't really have a great deal of games taking advantage of what the PS3 offers already?

i think we've probably seen the best it can handle squid, Killzone struggled to keep 30 fps even with the FOV down to 50 or something ridiculous. I don't think it's that much more powerful than 360.

i love the console but it feels underpowered for a lot of the games it tries to run, there's some good exceptions though like Uncharted and Rage, oh and Metal Gear Rising

... Seriously though, we can't look at yet another FPS and declare that it's worked the hardware to the max because it's pumped out the best graphics it can with the most people onscreen at once. It never used its hardware for anything innovative beyond Heavy Rain, really. With the hardware it had over the X-Box it should have, in theory, been the console of preference... Except that its price tag put it at only a few dollars under a far superior Gaming PC.

The problem I'm having in my head is: "Why make an even more powerful console when you already have a more powerful console that you can't use to topple a weaker console?"... It's going to have to have something new, or its going to have to bring consoles out of the mire the X-Box has put them in without having a thousand dollar price tag. Then you have to convince game makers to not make games which sell to the largest market... The 360 market. And why would they??

Now we are getting somewhere.

if you go on youtube and look at hardware comparisons i think the ps3 is really not much more powerful, it actually has less ram than the other one and everyone says its GPU is a bit weaker

either way if it was super more powerful Sony would have pushed Uncharted etc. even harder

Well, if you take a look at the raw stats, the X-Box has a more powerful GPU, but it doesn't match the PS3 for CPU or RAM. It should be "much of a muchness" overall, but nobody has really tried to take advantage of the fact that the PS3 RAM isn't shared between the CPU and the GPU... Look, suffice to say, and hardware aside, I don't know what will encourage people to give up their X-Box for a new generation of console unless it's presenting something special.

As it is, with most games being optimized for an X-Box, why would Average Console Gamer Joe go out and splash on this new machine? What have you got in mind, Sony?

hmm i dunno either, the Vita i think is struggling, 3DS is picking up, Wii-U seems to be doing well; hard to tell if a new console would be a flop or not

The Wii-U is the thorn in the side of logic. I can't wrap my head around why anyone would want one. I dunno, maybe this is why I work with numbers and have a basement full of severed fingers I like to lie on.

That gears screenie is prolly from the pc version.
I had it on an old pc and remember my old housemates friend seeing me play it and saying "holy **** that looks **** awsome compared to xbox"

it makes sense for families with kids, has all sorts of kid features; you can also play some games using just the controller screen, so the parents can watch TV while the kid plays the thing on his controller

That screenie is from gears 3 which isn't on PC. But it is scaled down so it looks better than it actually is.

Ok never played gears 3, the whole series should have been on pc.
