Section 1 - The GameArena crew and how to get in touch with them

Just before we go any further:
A full list of the Admin staff can be found here
A full list of the GameOp crew can be found here

1.a How can I contact a GameOp?

To get in touch with a GameOp you can do one of two things, you can either ask for one on The Arena or you can create a post on these forums asking for help. If you choose to create a post on these forums please make sure you have read this FAQ to make sure the topic hasn’t already been discussed.

1.b How can I contact a GameArena Admin?

To get in touch with an Admin you can use the contact support function on the website located here you can also find the link hiding under the help menu at the top of this page.

1.c How can I become a GameOp?

GameOps are individually picked by the current GameOp crew and accepted after consultation with the Admins. There are some criteria that greatly influence the our decision for new GameOp's, some of the criteria include
- Maturity:
You must be level headed and not be one to lose your cool when under fire from people. While you aren't payed as a GameOp, you're still providing a service (be it for free) to the gamers.
- Responsibility:
It is expected that you are a responsible person and can handle things well without expecting someone to hold your hand. You're going to just get thrown straight into the wolves :)
- Involvement:
Having a high post count and thousands of hours of game time on the servers wont make you a GameOp, it is expected that you're involved in the GameArena community.
- Dedication:
Often you will be required to put your plans aside to handle something. If you're not prepared to do this then you should not consider the position if you're ever asked. This can involve anything from sifting through cheat reports, doing unban requests and patrolling the servers to helping on the forums, helping in The Arena and organizing events and discussions.
- Image:
You must be well known and respected in the GameArena community. Someone who is well known, but as a clown, is not going to get picked for obvious reasons. If the players can't respect you they wont listen to you, even if it's in their best interests and everyone else’s on the server.
- Age:
You must be over the age of 18. If you're not, you will not be considered. This is not discrimination or favouritism, this is a legal requirement.

Section 2 - GameArena Public & Private Counter-Strike servers

2.a My STEAM_ID has been banned from GameArena, How can I go about getting unbanned?

If you have been banned from the GameArena service it is most likely because you have broken the Terms&Conditions The correct procedure to undertake if you have been banned and you are unsure why is to lodge an unban request which you can do via this link. Posting on the forums or asking a GameOp in The Arena Chat will not get you unbanned, you will simply be directed to the unban-request link provided here or worse still if you persist you may be banned from the chat as well !.

2.b Counter-Strike tells me I have been banned for past cheating violations, what does this mean?

If your CS tells you that you have been banned for past cheating violations it means the VAC (Valve Anti-Cheat) has banned you from our servers, lodging an unban request to us will achieve nothing. If you have been banned by VAC you can try their unban request form however Valve generally do not reverse VAC bans.

2.c I think there was a cheat on the server, what do I do?

If you think you have found a cheat on a GameArena server you can report them to the GameOp's for evaluation. In order to do this the GameOp's will need you to do these things
- Record a demo of the player (see 2.d if unsure about recording a demo)
- Open your console and type status to show the STEAM_ID’s of the player in question
- the correct format for a STEAM_ID is STEAM_x:x:xxxxx
- Take a snapshot of the status screen by either using the default key (f5) or typing 'snapshot' in the console.
- You can then combine the demo and the screenshot of their STEAM_ID in either a .zip or .rar format and submit them to the GameOp’s via this link. Both your demo and your screenshot can be found in your cstrike folder, the path will look like this one for example C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\your@email.com\counter-strike\cstrike.

2.d How do I record a demo in Counter-Strike?

To record a demo in CS you simply need to open up your console by pressing the ` key, then type 'record demoname'. This will start recording a demo to your cstrike folder under the name you have specified for the demo. To stop this demo simply open your console again and type 'stop'. There are a few things we GameOp's would like you to do when recording a demo, these include
- Using spectator mode, whilst it may seem silly we request that all player when recording demo's of a suspect player use the spectator mode which can be accessed by pressing m then 6, we request this because we do not want to see your own play be it good or bad mixed in with that of the suspect players.
- Make your demo's short and sweet. In order for us to ban a player we need demos which contain undisputable evidence that the player in question is in breach of the Terms&Conditions.
- To review your own demo you can watch by launching CS and typing in the console 'viewdemo demoname' or 'playdemo demoname'.
- Remember if you are going to submit the demo to the GameOp's a screenshot of their STEAM_ID must accompany the demo.

2.e What is a STEAM_ID? Where can i find mine ?

A STEAM_ID is valves way of identifying every individual player. It is commonly referred to as a player's unique_id as every players STEAM_ID differs from each other. A correct STEAM_ID format is as follows STEAM_x:x:xxxx
You can find your STEAM_ID by connecting to an online server, once you are connected type status in the console, it will bring up a list of all the players and their details, simply look for your name and your STEAM_ID will be alongside it.

2.f What is a GameCreate and how can I go about using GameCreate?

GameCreate is a free service for GameArena users, which enables you to book your very own counter-strike server for a period of time. You can book your own GameCreate server via this link. Please note you are only allowed two bookings each week so use them wisely.

2.g My GameCreate server hasn’t come up what should I do?

If your GameCreate server has not spawned (been created) yet there are a few things you can do, the first is to wait patiently for a few minute and see if the server is late. If it has been more then 15 minutes and your server has not yet spawned it would be helpful if you could contact support here and inform them of the server IP, the time of the booking and the date of the booking. This will enable the admins to look into any problem that may be occurring.

2.h I have been banned from GameCreate, what can I do?

If you have been banned from the GameArena service then you will be banned from the GameCreate service also, however if you have accidentally been banned for entering the wrong rcon password and trying to access the server through rcon then you will need to do the following steps to become unbanned
- Obtain your ip address, if you are unsure how to do so you can find out through this link
- Give the rcon password to either a friend in the server or a GameOp in The Arena chat if one is present
- If you have given the rcon password to a friend they will need to enter this command via rcon (make sure they have properly logged into rcon by using the rcon_password command)
- rcon removeip - for example rcon removeip 144.136.207.89, once this has been done you will be free to rejoin the server.
-Please be careful who you give out the rcon_password to because we cannot and will not take responsibility if someone 'steals' your server once you have given them the rcon password, so make sure you only give it to someone you fully trust!

Section 3 - GameArena Counter-Strike ladder

3a. How come I can't challenge?

Your clan is either in 'vulnerable' status (unable to challenge for 48hours due to a previous challenge and loss to another team) or does not currently have enough members in its team roster to lodge a challenge.

3b. How do I submit the results?

You can submit your results via the view challenge page on the GameArena site. Note that this must be done within 2 hours of the match's booking time having ended.

3c. What should I do when I dispute a result?

You _MUST_ include a detailed description of the dispute. The more information that is available the better. If you don't include enough information then the dispute will either be dismissed or take much longer than it should to dispute.

3d. What are the referees?

Referees are responsible players who have volunteered their time and been picked to help the GameOps out with the ladder by providing an unbiased player to both teams playing who can supervise the game.

3e. We requested a referee and they haven't showed..now what?

Start without them. We cannot guarantee a referee for every match being played. Every night there are more games than referees available. It is your responsibility to learn the basic rcon commands, you can do so here.

3f. I didn't know this/that was in the rules?

Ignorance is no excuse, make sure you have fully read and understood the rules. They can be viewed here.

3g. How many players does a team need to start a war?

Both teams require a minimum of 4 players by the required time (10 minutes).

3h. What is the time limit allowed before a forfeit is called on a team that is late in joining a server?

Strictly speaking, 10 minutes at most. It should not take you more then 10 minutes to organise the members of your team to join the server, if you are late it is nobodies fault but your own. If however the other team is willing to wait though, then that is fine; but there is a limit on the server time.

3i. Can a referee change the rcon password to maintain full control?

Yes.

3j. Does the war end after a team has won enough rounds to win the match?

Yes, the game is considered over once a team has reached 13 rounds.

3k. Can I abuse the other team?

Any team found to be using messagemode one extensively whilst in game will be forfeited. Once again make sure you are fully aware of the rules.

3l. How do I become a referee for the Counter-Strike ladder?

You must have good knowledge of the Half-Life rcon commands (Counter-Strike in particular), be mature, responsible and preferably an active member of the community. We would also like it if you were available most nights of the week.

Currently we are not seeking any new Ref's however when we are in need of fresh blood we will post on the forums and advertise in The Arena for applicants.

3m. When I try to challenge I get this message: "ERROR: Each starting time must be on a different day", what's wrong?

Basically there is a set amount of servers available at various times during the day. This means that there may not be any available server bookings. You have to wait until there are.

3n. How can I find out if clans on the ladder are recruiting or not?

Clan’s who are recruiting have a 'Recruiting' symbol beside their name . You can contact these clans here to discuss joining their ranks.

3o. A clan has submitted a dispute about the game we just played, what can I do?

You can reply in the dispute box found on the view challenge and state clearly your side of the dispute.

3p. It says my STEAM_ID isn’t registered on either team when i try to join the server, what’s wrong?

If you are unable to connect to your ladder server because it tells you that your STEAM_ID is not registered with either team it means that you have not properly submitted your STEAM_ID to the GameArena website _before_ the challenge has been accepted.

3.q How do I submit my STEAM_ID to the GameArena website?

You can submit your STEAM_ID to the GameArena website via this link.

Section 4 - Steam

A full comprehensive guide to Steam and how to best configure it can be found here

Section 5 - The Arena

5.a What is The Arena?

The Arena is a way of bringing the GameArena community together, while at the same time providing a better, more complete service. The Arena includes both a chat and a server browser feature. You can find The Arena FAQ page here.

5.b I'm a Mac user, is there a Mac version of The Arena?

Yes, it can be found here.

5.c I'm a Linux user, is there a Linux version of The Arena?

Yes, it can be found here.

5.d Is The Arena required for ladder wars?

Yes, it is compulsory to log into The Arena in order to connect to your ladder war server.

5.e What is a Skin for The Arena, how do I go about getting one?

A skin is a new colour scheme replacement for the original 'The Arena' colours. one such skin and details about how to install this skin can be found here.

Section 6 - Counter-Strike Forum Editorial Policy

A guide on how to use the forum.

Counter-Strike Forum Editorial Policy:

Creating New Topics for the purposes of abusing other people will get locked and probably deleted.

If a thread degenerates into a flame war, it will get locked or possibly deleted. If the thread creator wishes for the thread to stay alive, then it is up to them to remain civil regardless of how they are provoked. People who try to hijack other people’s threads in order to be disruptive will have their posts deleted.

Posts dragging up old threads will be deleted, and the thread locked.

The Arena questions and/or problems go in the The Arena Feedback Forum
Off topic posts will probably get locked. This is the Counter-Strike Forum, not the DoD or Quake or whatever other game you care to mention, forum. Other off topic posts will be dealt with on a case by case basis.

This is the Counter-Strike Forum and is clearly marked as such. If you do not like the game, don’t post in this forum. Most of us are fully aware of the deficiencies in Counter-Strike and the Half-Life engine, you are not telling us anything we do not already know.

Posts & threads that appear to be designed primarily to increase your post count will get deleted or locked. Quantity is not Quality. You are not your post count.
Posts answered by the Counter-Strike Forum FAQ thread located at the top of this forum will be locked or deleted.

Posts asking "why was my post deleted?" will be deleted.
Similar topic threads, will get locked. We do not want to see the same topic rehashed 10 times in the same week or month.

New threads created with extremely poor Grammar and/or Punctuation will get locked and deleted. If you want people to spend time reading your 100 or more word essay, at least put the time into making it comprehensible.

Cheaters and hackers are not welcome in this forum, don't be surprised when your posts are deleted.

Don't put your signatures manually into your posts. It **** off all the people who have consciously decided to not see other peoples signatures. Don't be surprised when you find your posts deleted.

When you post on the GameArena Forums your IP address is logged, as it is when you join a game.

These rules are designed to ensure a pleasant browsing experience for forum regulars.
Repeat offenders who wish to test our resolve on this matter will be banned from all half life servers including GameCreate.

This will be a 2 week ban the first time, permanent ban if you continue to do it.

Section 7 - Care and Feeding of your GameOp's:

GameOps are people too. Don’t abuse the GameOps on the server, even in jest. It gets old real fast and we don't have to put up with it. If you were in our position, would you? Mute is not an option for GameOps, for obvious reasons.

The GameOp's job is to keep the server running smoothly. Your interpretation of what running smoothly means may differ from the GameOps, but the server is not the place to start arguing about it.

Keeping the server running smoothly means:

Stopping players camping spawn constantly and not completing the objective.
Hurrying players along wasting time not completing the objective, so the rest of the server is not left sitting in spectator mode. Most players do not appreciate sitting in spectator mode for any length of time. Well I don't. A quick game, is a good game! :)
Stopping players teamkilling, teamflashing, teamblocking, accidentally or on purpose. Accidental teamkillers will be asked to leave the server if they cannot learn to not teamkill. There are lots of non-friendly fires servers they can play on where they can learn the fundamentals of the game, like aiming. :)

Act as a visible deterrent to abusive players and cheats.

Enforce the GameArena Terms&Conditions

The list above is not mean to be an exclusive list of what a GameOp is supposed to do or not do, but provides a guideline as to what to expect.

GameOp's like you are members of the community who like to enjoy a peaceful game of CS. Constantly asking the questions or requesting actions such as map changes or requesting a player to be kicked is generally not a good idea. Whilst we are there to patrol the servers, at times we like to do so in peace.

Asking GameOps questions in game, is probably not the best place to ask questions. Besides trying to keep things running smoothly, the GameOps are there to play as well. If you have questions, then The Arena chat or this Forum is the superior medium.

If we never have to say or do a single thing using rcon or in chat, then that is when us GameOps are most happy. :)

Without using COGS you could connect to the servers, have they changed that?

I was thinking to combine this post and the FRT?

Looking good Catalyst :)

It's an updated version of Twisted and Whisper's FAQ that they wrote about 2 years ago or so, so he didn't write all of it, but changed alot of details.
Very nice work Cat :)

Perhaps this question should be added to the FAQ list, as I believe it is currently the most asked question in The Arena chat:
Could a gameop ban the hacker in #7 !?!1

didnt take that much out of one afternoon and hopefully once in a blue moon someone will actualy read it and save me time in the future :)

I do like the bit about mute, I'd definitely be using that function after hearing alot of the meaningless, abusive things people say towards GameOP's. Those who act with the suitable amount of decorum will get further than those who don't.

Well written, nice work.

...

Your issue is with Steam. Close the thing and find your way to Clientregistry.blob - that's the only hint I'll give you for bumping such a massively old thread.
