Welcome to the new GDT version 3.0. After a sluggish finish with GDT buy photoshop imo, this new thread should give a whole new fresh start and will allow new users to showcase their inner talent. Some of you may be wondering what this thread is about, so I comprised some questions and answers which should clear any dilemmas of all sorts. Unfortunately for the GDT series have been very slow lately due to many members leaving and getting banned. We like to keep this community alive as it is the pinnacle of lfe in the competition forums. This is the perfect place for you to show new signatures, test your new images and ask for opinions on your latest work. In addition trash talk is perfectly fine

What does GDT stand for?
GDT stands for Graphics design thread

Whats the point of it?
The name speaks for it self. This is the thread to post your own creativity using such programs like Adobe Photoshop, Macromedia Fireworks, paint and flash

What content can be posted?
Pretty much anything that tickles your fancy. I dont care if you post images of naked girls. Most preferable if it was your own work. Most popular include signatures. web layouts, myspace layouts and images of your own work

This thread looks like a different version of SLOW
GDT is welcome for anyone who is looking for a chat or feeling kind of lonely.

Where did these threads come from?
GDT was previously known as Sig Comp but was renamed graphics design thread which allows users to post more than just signatures

Why is this thread in the competition forum?
As stated above the original Sig comp threads were originally used to showcase your sigs and users would pick who had the best one. Obviously in the end you won nothing.

Guide to using image HTML on GameArena

While GameArena uses HTML code on their website, it is important to note that there are a few things you'd like to know when uploading and coding your images. You will soon realize the website uses different brackets for HTML coding. Simply putting it, the site uses these two brackets. <>. As opposed to where most sites use []. If you do use the second set of brackets, your code will not work and your image will end up being a series of text. Happily for you is that once you get used to using <>, everything is a piece of cake. beside that, all coding is the same including quoting, underscoring, bold and italic

Some examples including images
The following are just a few of the massive list of codes. Once you enter the code, remove the space between the brackets.

showing an image in your post
< img src="the link of your image" >

Make sure the link of the image ends with the file format. Examples like JPEG or GIF. Also note, your links should be of an internet source. If you link it from your home computer, you'll be treated to a red cross.

Changing your text to bold
< b > between here is the text you want to bold < /b >

By far the easiest. make sure to close your bold by typing / before the b or your whole post will be bolded

Changing your text to Italic
< i > Between here is the text you want to italic < /i >

Basically the same rules when changing selected text to bold

Quoting someone else's post or text
< quote > Copy and paste the text that you wish to quote < /quote >

Quoting comes into play when you are answering or replying to someone else's message. This comes handy when there are multiple discussions going on in one situation. It is not required to quote when the poster you are replying to is right above you.

What are some good places to upload images?

There are dozens of sites that offer free service to upload images and files. In many cases you will have to sign up. GameArena also allows you to upload a signature, however there are size restrictions and this case, they are quite small.

http://www.photobucket.com

http://www.imageshack.com

The following two sites are reliable places to upload images. Both allow you to view your images similar to a photo album and upload multiple images at a time

http://www.tinypic.com

Tinypic allows you to quickly upload images where links are very small and comprise of a random code. However over a certain period tinypic will delete the image, so you will have to upload it again.

Is it just me or has imageshack just failed hardcore lately.

I don't bother with it anymore, I've switched back to Photobucket.

I dunno. I never used Imageshack because I already have an account with photobucket. But I do see massive fail links where the image turns into a frog with massive writing saying imageshack on it.

I only use image shack for hosting my desktop screen shots because photo bucket has a resolution limit. Even then, I find image shack horribly confusing.

lol thats the good thing. I find facebook much more mature than myspace because theres more limitations to what you can do and edit. I'm not a big fan of public profiles though.

Hi good people. Not sure if this is the right place for it, but here goes anyway :)

I am using photoshop cs2 (and or photoshop 7) to rey and make a new sig, so far so good, but i cant seem to get it under the dreaded size limit set in here.

Is there some sort of compression built in to either program that will enable me to decrease the size of the file, while leaving the image in it's original size/state?

There are not too many different layers in them, i have flattened them anyway, but apart from a picture and some text, there isnt much in it.

Any tips will earn my undying <3 lol

Here is ther image as it currently stands.

I want to see what it looks like anyway :)

I'm using CS3 which allows you to save as a JPEG but in the earlier versions, could you export the image into a JPEG or GIF? If not you can download image viewers that can change the format for you that will ultimately reduce the size of your image since PNG's are killers.

IRFANVIEW is a good little image viewer/program that lets you change the file format from PNG to JPEG with excellent quality. Just type Irfanview in google and it will be there.

Oh and is your sig using transparency?

I made it a gif this time, and changed the background colour. I wasnt too sure about the png vs gif thing though, but there you go :)

It was a white background, with some transparency on top, but you cant really see it on this site, so i changed the background colour.

Trying it again :)

And thanks for your help Pingu :)

Signature, in sig.

How the **** do you centre your sig on these forums, I believe I have tried everything... Does it use some sort of pseudo html? Anyway I have some new website gear coming this way later in the week too.

You guys may blow your load a little, but I'm picking up a Cintiq in November :D

Straight up awesome Bocky, this is the direction I'm heading in, but I need a little more training and whatnot. All my history is in 3D animation for short films and video games. Took me a while to make the change but I'm slowly moving towards Graphic Design, ultimately that's where I want to work. I start my degree next year :)

For the meantime, here's a fairly standard matte painting. Mostly 3D except the atmosphere, which was painted in using photoshop.

Damn you people! Don't leave me behiiiind! ='[

That being said..

@Damez: HOLY CRAP! That. Is just friggin awesome.
@Badomen: Aaaaargh! That's also friggin awesome.. Did you use terragen?
@Bocky: I love that grungy style, and those posters are awesome in their own right.

Maybe we should change the thread title to "GDT 3.0 - We have Awesome(tm) on tap"

(I'll be back very soon, just got two HSC exams left and they're just 3U and physics so I can start making stuff tomorrow =D)
